Cellular-automata models of ant-trail and vehicular traffic: similarities and differences
Abstract
Vehicular traffic and ant-trail are two examples of systems consisting of interacting self-driven particles where vehicles and ants are modeled as particles and their mutual influence in the traffic and the trail, respectively, are captured through inter-particle interactions. We extend the Nagel-Schreckenberg model, which is a minimal model of vehicular traffic on freeways, to develop a minimal model of ant-trail in terms of cellular automata. We demonstrate some unusual properties of the model which, in principle, can be tested experimentally. Keywords
