Abstract
Introduction In 1952 and 1954 we reported our results in 1,375 cases of primary inguinal hernioplasty in adult patients.1,2 This current report is based upon our total experience of 3,572 operations performed during a 16-year period beginning Aug 1, 1946. A current evaluation of the results of primary repair of inguinal hernia in the adult continues to be one of the most important socioeconomic problems in modern medicine. Even though there are currently a number of anatomically and technically sound surgical procedures for the repair of this congenital and/or acquired disabling defect, the recurrence rate countrywide continues to remain too high. A recent survey of the literature revealed considerable variations in this respect; from a low of 0.85% to 21% with an average of about 7% for indirect and 8.5% for direct type hernias.3-13 These, however, are reports from groups and centers which have had a broad experience
