Abstract
We seem to spend most of our time as psychologists in helping other people to look at themselves and to re‐assess the world about them. This conference gives us an opportunity to look at ourselves for a change, and to consider the world about us. If we do step back for a moment we cannot help but sense the undertones of mistaken ideas about psychology. We may choose to ignore these attitudes altogether, and this is occasionally the most effective method of dealing with opposition, or we may pass off criticism as the deep inner rumblings of a basically insecure person. There comes a time when we should face criticism squarely. We may then have cause to thank our critics, for by challenging our fundamental principles they can make us re‐examine ourselves, our theories and our techniques. Keywords
