Abstract
A 20 years old white male hospitalized for infectious hepatitis is described. No anemia was present, however, target cells and slightly increased reticulocytes were the indication for electrophoretic separation of hemoglobin. 23% of a fast moving abnormal hemoglobin was found. At pH 8.6 the abnormal fraction migrated between Hb J und Hb H and was identified as a new variant of Hb I. In contract to the classical Hb I with the formula [alpha]216Asp[beta]B2 the new variant contained the same substitution in position 15 of the a-chain: [beta]215Asp[beta]2. It was given the designation of "Hb Iinterlaken. Keywords
