Abstract
Chemicals and chemical formulations are often extensively tested for purity, activity and conformance. However, in a surprising large number of cases these tests miss the point; in that the material has the wrong composition. Through human, mechanical or computer error the product is mislabeled or mischarged. These wrong compositions may still pass the control tests but will not work for their intended end-uses, i.e. they are 100% pure wrong stuff. In order to "error-proof" our producls, Du Pont has developed our "Compositional Assurance Testing System" (CATS ). If the sample is contaminated, mislabeled or mischarged the differences are immediately apparent because a "goodness of fit" is too large. The lot can then be rejected and the problem investigated. The system employs a Fourier transform spectrometer and special computer program. With it an operator can verify the composition of a raw mterial, intermediate or finished product in less than three minutes. Keywords
