Epidermoid Cyst of the Spleen Presenting as an Abdominal Emergency

Abstract
CYSTS of the spleen are uncommon and epidermoid cysts form only a small percentage of the total number. This case represents the unusual occurrence of infection within an epidermoid cyst of the spleen after relatively minor trauma. It presented as an acute abdominal emergency, with jaundice and high fever complicating the differential diagnosis. In reviewing the literature, we have found 43 cases of epidermoid cysts of the spleen.1-5Several of the cases presented with an acute abdominal illness after trauma, but most presented with a left-upper-quadrant mass with or without abdominal symptoms in an otherwise healthy patient. None presented with jaundice, and none presented with evidence of infection or septicemia.
