Abstract
Colostomy closure is a major colonic operation with significant complication rates. Patients (89) were studied to determine the incidence of complications and the factors that may be implicated in these complications. Of the 89 patients, 33 (36.9%) experienced complications. Wound infections were the primary cause (16 patients, 17.9%) and fecal fistulas the 2nd most common cause (5 patients, 5.6%). Delayed primary skin closure and preoperative systemic antibiotic coverage resulted in significant reduction of complications. Monofilament wire and intraluminal antibiotics reduced complications to a lesser extent. This publication has 8 references indexed in Scilit:
