The Massachusetts Supported Work Program

Abstract
In late 1981, the State of Massachusetts implemented an innovative supported work program to assist mentally retarded persons seeking to transition to competitive employment from school, sheltered work, or unemployment. This article discusses the first four years of this unique state-funded initiative. It reviews the partnerships between state referral and funding agencies, and educational and rehabilitation service providers and employers, that have made the program a success. The paper also discusses the details of the supported work training model as used in Massachusetts and concludes that this methodology is generally replicable.
