This paper reports an attempt to describe economic structure using input-output tables. The various attempts to develop holistic matrix descriptors are summarized. Analysis of the relationship between the corresponding cells of ten transactions tables of Queensland regions and the economic size of these regions shows that many cells are individually ‘predictable', and that patterns of predictability are identifiable. Specifically, it is possible to recognize a group of cells on the ‘more tertiary’ end of the primary-tertiary continuum which appear to constitute a predictable fundamental structure of regional economies. Die verschiedenen Versuche, ganzheitliche Matrixdeskriptoren zu entwickeln, werden zusammenge-fasst. Die Analyse der Beziehungen zwischen den korre-spondierenden Zellen von zehn Transaktionstabellen von Gebieten in Queensland und ihrer wirtschaftlichen Dimension zeigt, dass viele Zellen individuell durchaus ‘voraussagbar’ sind und das Muster der Voraussagbarkeit identifizier-bar ist. Ganz besonders gut erkennbar ist eine Gruppe Zellen auf dem extremen Flügel (more tertiary') des primär-tertiären Kontinuums, die eine voraussagbare Fundamentalstruktur der regionalen Wirtschaftswesen darzustellen scheint.
