Effect of Sea-run Alewives on Rainbow Trout and Brown Trout in Reclaimed Ponds

Abstract

Investigators combined yearling and fingerling rainbow trout (Salmo gairdneri) and brown trout (Salmo trutta) with adult and young sea-run alewives (Alosa pseudoharengus) in ponds cleared of other fish species. Fish recovery by chemical reclamation showed that, when alewives were present, trout numbers and biomass were lower, trout released as yearlings were larger after 18 months, and trout released as fingerlings were smaller after 11 months.
