Abstract
Radioactive glutaconic acid was isolated from reaction mixtures in which Peptococcus aerogenes fermented glutamic acid-2-14C. The infrared spectrum, X-ray diffraction pattern, and melting point of the biologicai product is identical with that of chemically synthesized glutaconic acid. Cells of P. aerogenes fermented glutaconic acid, although at low rate, producing acetic and butyric acid. A possible role for glutaconic acid in the fermentation of glutamic acid is presented. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
