Alcohol enzyme of Bact. coli

Abstract
Escherichia coli oxidized alcohol and acetaldehyde. Using the Booth-Green wet-crushing mill alcohol dehydrogenase was obtained soluble and cell-free. The enzyme oxidizes ethyl alcohol in the following system; alcohol dehydrogenase[long dash]coenzyme I[long dash]diaphorase[long dash]methylene blue[long dash]oxygen. Semicarbazide was required as a fixative for the acetaldehyde produced. Acet-aldehyde was identified by means of its 2,4-dinitrophenyl-hydrazone. The enzyme was inhibited by iodoacetate. It is probably identical with the corresponding enzyme of yeast isolated by Negelein and Wulff.
