Abstract
Benzoyl carbinol and its simple derivatives have a pronounced antipermeability activity, which is probably due to their anti-hyaluronidase activity. The assay consisted of a modified phenol red test on the synovial membrane of the rabbit. Various adrenal keto steroids were also active in this system. Activity was decreased, and not increased, in derivatives with more rings, and resembling the hormones; the effect of substituents in simpler derivatives was therefore investigated and their preparation is described. p-Acetoxybenzoyl carbinol acetate and 4:6-dihydroxy-3-cumaranone possessed considerable anti-permeability activity. m-Acetoxy-benzoyl carbinol acetate, p-carbethoxybenzoyl carbinol, 3:3[image]-bis-[w -acetoxyacetyl]-diphenylmethane, 3-benzyl-4-acetoxybenzoyl carbinol acetate and phenyl acetoxymethyl sulphone were inactive. Keywords
