Oxidation of Externally Added NADH by Isolated Corn Root Mitochondria

Abstract
Mitochondria isolated from the root tips of Zea mays are able to oxidize externally added NADH and to couple this oxidation to phosphorylation of ADP. Electron micrographs of mitochondria suspended in media of various molarities or containing small amounts of high molecular weight polymers indicate that the ability to oxidize exogenous NADH is associated with unswollen or dense mitochondrial form. It is suggested that the accessibility of external substrates to intramitochondrial enzymes is 1 of the major differences between plant and animal mitochondria.This publication has 15 references indexed in Scilit:
