Abstract

The theory of potential functions in dynamical elasticity is developed. The special cases of plane-stress and plane-strain motion are examined, and it is shown that the various well-known plane-strain solutions have counterparts in plane stress. These correspond, effectively, to a change in one elastic constant (the medium being assumed to be homogeneous and isotropic). The representative problem of sysmetrical waves in an elastic plate is treated.
