Incidence of Mongolism and its Diagnosis in the Newborn

Abstract
From details supplied by 12 hospitals'' and maternity units in London and the Home Counties the incidence of mongolism is calculated as 1.5 per 1000 maternities: it is then related to, and found to rise significantly with, maternal age. Incidence of mongolism in the general population is estimated at approx. 1.6 per 1000 maternities. It is suggested that further allowance would have to be made for infant cases unrecognized as mongolism; and methods of early diagnosis are discussed and illustrated.
