Abstract
Two digestion trials evaluating four different forages fed simultaneously to steers and geldings in the same environment were conducted to compare the digestive capacities of the two animal species. Between animal species, a significant difference (P<.01) was obtained for each of the components with the exception of protein and NFE (P<.05). A significant difference (P<.01) was obtained between forages for each nutrient except cellulose (P<.05). A paired t test indicated a difference in favor of steers' digestion of all components in grass hays, with the exceptions of protein and NFE. The components in alfalfa hay were digested to the same extent by steers and geldings, with the exceptions of CF and cellulose. Copyright © 1970. American Society of Animal Science .
