Abstract
Two cases of severe chickenpox in young men in their twenties are described where vidarabine, 11 mg/kg of bodyweight in normal saline intravenously for 3 days led to dramatic clinical improvement and disappearance of the varicella/zoster virus within 24 h. Recovery also occurred in a 77-year old man with zoster of the left maxillary nerve who overnight developed purpura fulminans of the left cheek and generalized zoster. The place of the treatment of varicella/zoster in man with vidarabine is discussed briefly.
