Abstract
Conditions for the existence of an electromagnetic field in the presence of matter and pressure are expressed in terms of the eigenvalues and eigenvectors of the Ricci tensor. The question of the representation of conditions for a null field as the limit of corresponding conditions for a non-null field in the absence of matter is examined from a new point of view. Keywords
