Abstract
Meiotic chromosome numbers are reported for 42 taxa in 36 spp. of 9 Cactaceae genera [Cereus, Machaerocereus, Rathbunia, Echinocactus, Echinocereus, Ferocactus, Sclerocactus, Coryphantha and Mammillaria] of southwestern USA and northern Mexico. First counts for 17 taxa belonging to 15 spp. are reported, including 1st counts for 3 genera (Machaerocereus, Rathbunia and Sclerocactus). Diploid and polyploid taxa, including 1 triploid, were observed, all consistent with the base number, x = 11. Polyploidy plays an important evolutionary role in Cactaceae. This publication has 1 reference indexed in Scilit:
