Abstract
MUCH scientific effort is being devoted to the study of the etiology and prevention of thromboembolic disease, one of the major "killers" in the United States. One approach that promises to have an important role makes use of a natural defense system possessed by the body, the fibrinolytic mechanism. Because of its pathogenetic implications and the therapeutic possibilities progress in fibrinolysis has a profound influence in the medical community.Since comprehensive reviews on fibrinolysis were published in 19581 and in 19612 this report will primarily consider the advances that have taken place within the past five years.
