Abstract
To the Editor: Every group with experience in clinical renal transplantation has experienced a number of catastrophic failures, commonly referred to as "hyperacute" rejections, during the first minutes to hours after transplantation. (New Eng. J. Med., September 19, 1968). Although the cause of some of these reactions may be in doubt, there is little question now that presensitization (recipient serum antibody vs donor antigens), when detected by the complement-mediated cytotoxicity test against donor lymphocytes, almost always produces such early and generally irreversible rejections.
