PHYSIOLOGY OF THE CORPUS LUTEUM

Abstract
Alcoholic extracts of the corpus luteum, freed from phospholipids, contain a substance which when injected into castrated adult female rabbits induces a characteristic alteration of the endometrium identical with the progestational proliferation previously shown to be due to the presence of corpora lutea in the ovaries. A similar effect is sometimes but not always produced in immature rabbits 8 to 12 weeks old. Extracts of follicular fluid containing large amounts of oestrin do not produce progestational proliferation, nor have extracts of human placenta given positive results. It appears, therefore, that the extracts of corpus luteum contain a special hormone which has for one of its functions the preparation of the uterus for reception of the embryos by inducing pro gestational proliferation of the endometrium.
