Effect of Ration Calcium Level, Oxytetracycline and Terephthalic Acid upon the Performance of Growing Pigs

Abstract
Forty-eight crossbred pigs were used in a study of the effect of terephthalic acid and ration calcium level on serum antibiotic levels and the productive efficiency of growing pigs from 9–16 weeks of age. The results of the trial showed that a reduction in ration calcium level from 0.85% to 0.42% markedly increased serum oxytetracycline levels. When the ration contained 0.42% calcium, supplementation with 0.4% terephthalic acid brought about a further significant (P<.05) degree of antibiotic potentiation. The increase in serum antibiotic levels was not, however, accompanied by any improvement in liveweight gain, feed efficiency or the apparent digestibility of nutrients. Copyright © . .
