Abstract
The electronic dipole polarizabilities of the alkali atoms have been calculated by a method in which the inhomogeneous Schrödinger equation for the dipole perturbation of the valence electron wave function is solved directly. The theoretical results for are in reasonably good agreement with the observed values from two recent experiments.
