Abstract
The Forth Estuary is one of the foggiest sea areas of Scotland. Observations of visibility from Inchkeith Lighthouse indicate a seasonal typology of fogs, which are associated with onshore flow in summer and offshore flow in winter. Although season, time of day and mesoscale synoptic conditions are the dominant controls on fog occurrence, it is possible to identify a strong tidal influence. Directional statistical techniques are employed to test for tidal effect. Keywords
