Abstract
The availability of direct assistance from kin to older persons is limited by their number and by the proximity of their residence to the older person. This study gathered information on the availability and proximity of children and siblings to a judgment sample of persons aged 45 and older drawn from the obituary section of a daily newspaper. Although 76.6% of the total sample were survived by children or siblings living nearby, 24.7% of the decedents aged 65 and older had no surviving children or siblings residing near enough to provide regular direct assistance. Keywords
