IMMUNE REACTIONS OF CARRIERS AND NONCARRIERS OF TYPE–SPECIFIC PNEUMOCOCCI. A BACTERIOLOGICAL AND IMMTJNOLOGICAL STUDY OF HOSPITAL CONTACTS12

Abstract
The % of pneumococcus carriers and the distribution of types was the same among hospital contacts as among persons in the general population. Carriers had or acquired homologous type-specific antibodies. The pneumococci were apparently acquired just as often from among the carriers themselves as from among the patients. 4 subjects developed atypical pneumonia which apparently had no relation to the pneumococci which were recovered from them.
