Abstract
The positions of equilibrium for the exchange reactions of silyl or germyl halides with hydrogen halides have been investigated over a range of temperature; the reactions are rapid at room temperature, but not fast by the n.m.r. time-scale. The equilibrium constants favour the heavier halogen bound to germanium, and the lighter bound to silicon. Exchange reactions between silyl and germyl compounds have been used to make a number of germyl compounds. Keywords
