Exact Theory of Breathing Modes in a 2D Trapped Bose Gas
Abstract
We show that the existence of universal ``breathing'' modes of atoms in two dimensions confined in a harmonic potential can be explained by a simple underlying symmetry. This symmetry SO(2,1), i.e. the two dimensional Lorentz group, allows to construct pulsating solutions for the interacting quantum system and for the nonlinear Gross-Pitaevskii equation. These modes have a clear experimental signature. Keywords
