Abstract
The chromosomes of I. asiatica were studied at mitosis in root tips (2n = 22). The karyotype is represented as follows: 2V (H1 H2) + 4V + 4J + j. Negative heteropyknosis was observed in the H1 and H2 chromosomes of this species. The karyotype of L asiatica appears similar to that of Anthoceros, and it is postulated that the karytype of Isoetes is a secondary basic type within the Bryophyta.
