Medullary tissue culture of the red alga Chondrus crispus

Abstract
Techniques were developed for the isolation and axenic culture of medullary tissue explants from female gametophytic fronds of Chondrus crispus Stackh. When a strain with narrow thick branches was grown in vitro in a special, enriched seawater medium with added growth regulators, the colourless medullary tissue explants (2-mm cubes) produced fronds exhibiting the normal morphology of the parent plant.
