Abstract
A committee was formed to consider the practicability of introducing dust exposurc records with a view to finding whether there was an exposure-response relationship betwen dust and asbestosis or not. A preliminary investigation was started which was limited to a section of the persons employed on asbestos mines. Dust concentration is expressed in terms of three parameters: long fibres, short fibres and quartz equivalent particles. The dust exposure is terms of (fibres/m3) shifts and quartz equivalent (particles/cm3) shifts is calculated retrospectively from time trends of dust concentration with calendar year on asbestos mines and conversion factors between mine mean and occupational full shift mean. The occupational histories of about 2200 persons exposed to asbestos dust have been processed and the dust exposure of each person estimated. The study is to be continued as a prospective one. Keywords
