Abstract
The pregnant rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) and baboon (both Papio papio and P. anubis) are used as research models of human pregnancy. The primate uterus is sensitive to manipulation, labor is frequently initiated prematurely by fetal surgery and there is a substantial incidence of postoperative intrauterine death. Experience with the chronic model derived from 246 rhesus monkey pregnancies and 19 baboon pregnancies was discussed. There was no single surgical-technical approach consistently successful in obtaining a chronically catheterized fetal-maternal preparation in the pregnant monkey or baboon. The variables of preoperative medication, acclimation to restraint, operative anesthesia, postoperative antibiotics and type of restraint chair are discussed. Keywords
