Abstract
Summary: This paper dealt with an historical aspect of narcotic use in this country, It traces attempts to produce opium both experimentally and commercially over a period of eighty years from the mid‐eighteenth century to the 1820s. Methods and areas of cultivation, as well as the problem of finding a suitable labour force, are dealt with. While it is at present uncertain how far cultivation of the opium poppy ever became fully established, details of this experimental stage are indicative both of contemporary medical attitudes towards the use of opium, and to dependence itself, attitudes which differ in many significant respects to those of today. This publication has 0 references indexed in Scilit:
