Abstract
Pythium irregulare (Phycornycetes) isolates from many locations in Australia, Europe, U.S.A., and Canada all formed predominantly falcate, elongated antheridia in liquid cultures. On solid media the antheridia were mostly short and swollen. For this and other reasons P. polymormphos Sideris, which has been supposed to be unique because of its falcate antheridia, is considered only as a synonym of P. irregulare. Antheridia of 10 other spp. were affected less or not at all by liquid environment. Among these were P. debaryanum Hesse, P. mamillatum Meurs, P. pyrilobum Vaartaja, P. paroecandrum Drechsl., and P. violae Chesters et Hickm.
