The hypothesis that group superiority in mental work is greater in materials permitting a greater range of response was tested, using two forms of completion, vocabulary, limerick completion, and cross-word puzzle tests. Results with the first three types of material were in accord with the hypothesis. Making cross-word puzzles was carried out less successfully by the group than solving them. The complexity of the integration involved in making the puzzle is suggested as a possible cause of this outcome. (PsycINFO Database Record (c) 2006 APA, all rights reserved)
