MENTORING THE NOVICE

Abstract
Insecurity, feeling threatened by authority figures, overstimulation, and fear of the unknown are common themes in the distress of novice nursing students that faculty frequently overlook in their eagerness to teach medical-surgical nursing skills. These four themes are discussed, and guidelines for mentoring the novice are provided. Faculty can guide students through this maze and nurture their self-confidence. The mentoring role can result in a greater personal satisfaction and vicarious self-fulfillment for the faculty member.
