Abstract
In the course of investigation of salivary protein by the Tiselius electrophoretic apparatus, the author observed variation in both pattern and mobility of the several components. This variation led to the study of salivary protein to determine whether a constant amt. of protein could be obtained by uniformity in collection technique. Previous studies have demonstrated wide variations in salivary protein values, the mean values establishing salivary protein concn. at 260-333 mg. % of saliva. However, the standard deviation in these studies has varied from 45 to 118 mg./100ml., demonstrating the wide range of values. In this study, several variables were made constant, i.e., salivary samples were uniform as to amt. collected, time of salivary stimulation, size of paraffin block, and collection-analysis interval. Samples were taken from .35 volunteers who had no breakfast, for purpose of minimizing the effect of protein intake. The method of Greenberg, as adapted for salivary protein by Krasnow, was utilized on 1 ml. samples. A mean value of 280.4 mg. % was obtained. The standard deviation of the series was 65.9 mg. %. It may be concluded that control of the several factors considered by the author has no effect upon the variability of salivary protein concn. Keywords
