Posttraumatic Stress, Problem Drinking, and Functional Outcomes After Injury

Abstract
FUNCTIONAL limitations and health-related quality of life are important measures of outcome following injury.1,2 Longitudinal investigations suggest that the type and severity of injury,3 age,4 preinjury physical function,5 income,6 and social support4,5 can contribute to functional disability after physical trauma. Although the nature and extent of the injury are important determinants of posttraumatic functional disability, recent investigation suggests that other factors may play an equally important role in determining the progression of postinjury impairment.5
