Abstract
The history of research on display design is described briefly and the general problems of real/artificial displays and new/stored information are discussed with particular emphasis on compatibility The main discussion centres on the advantages and limitations of the three general approaches to display design: use of checklists, use of formal procedures and use of behaviour theory. A checklist for display design is provided and the other procedures are illustrated by case studies. Keywords
