Abstract
(With the collaboration of F. F. M. de Almeida, K. Beurlen, J. v. N. Dorr, II, H. Ebert, D. Guimarães, M. Gordon, Jr., W. Kegel, P. S. Kistler, A. R. Lamego, V. Leinz, P. E. de Oliveira, and L. I. Price) INTRODUCTION Professor John Casper Branner of Stanford University is responsible for the first Geological Map of Brazil, published in the Bulletin Of The Geological Society Of America (1919). The map, on a scale of 1:5,000,000, is accompanied by an explanatory text of 152 pages and an extensive bibliography. Like W. von Eschwege, C. F. Hartt, and Orville A. Derby, Branner contributed in a decisive manner to the spread of geological knowledge of Brazil. In 1938 a new Mapa Geologico do Brasil e de Parte dos Paizes Visinhos, on a scale of 1:7,000,000, was included in the book Geologia do Brasil by Avelino Ignacio de Oliveira and Othon Henry Leonardos (1940 de Oliveira and Othon Henry Leonardos (1943). A third Geological Map of Brazil, on a scale of 1:5,000,000 was published in 1942 by the Divisão de Geologia e Mineralogia of the Departamento Nacional da Produção Mineral. All these publications furnished material for the preparation of the Brazilian section of the Geologic Map of South America. The collaboration of the Divisão de Geologia e Mineralogia and the Divisão de Fomento da Produção Mineral and of the Sociedade Brasileira de Geologia was also requested.
