Abstract
Embryonic development is the orchestrated aggregate of many instances of cell mitosis, migration, and differentiation. Using new techniques to trace the fate of individual cells and their progeny in the leech embryo, it is possible to examine how intrinsic factors delimited by a cell's mitotic history interact with factors in its environment to determine the part it plays in embryogenesis. Keywords
