Abstract
An extensor movement of the middle finger of the right hand was conditioned to a buzzer, shock being the unconditioned stimulus. Then a differential response between the buzzer and a bell was established. Following this the hand was turned over, making the movement necessary to remove the finger from the electrode a flexor one. All of the seven subjects responded by making flexor movements to the buzzer, and only 2 made responses to the bell. The study indicates that it is not a particular movement which is conditioned, but a general adaptive response.
