Abstract
The Holmes and MacAndrew Scales of the MMPI [Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory] were completed by 3 groups of women, 20 members of Alcoholics Anonymous, 20 psychiatric inpatients who were not alcoholics and 20 nonalcoholics in the general population. All the women were white, middle-class and had a mean age of 35 and a mean educational level of 11 yr. Results of the tests showed no significant differences in the groups'' mean scores on either scale. Chi-square analysis showed that 7 items on the Holmes and 1 item on the MacAndrew Scale achieved significance in contrasting alcoholics and psychiatric inpatients; 12 items on the Holmes and 10 on the MacAndrew Scale were significant in differentiating between alcoholics and normal subjects.
