Abstract
Recent isozyme and theoretical work suggests that colonizing episodes may be either accompanied or caused by genetic changes. Ten loci were studied electrophoretically in 4 samples of Plecia nearctica Hardy, which is presently colonizing the Florida peninsula. Almost no genetic differentiation was detected between samples from areas being actively colonized and those that have been occupied for up to 10 yr. Genetic variation was high, with 7 of the loci polymorphic and an avg heterozygosity of 0.326.
