Abstract
The depressant actions of N2, argon, sulfurhexafluoride and nitrous oxide have been measured by determining the partial pressures which will abolish the response following supramaximal electro-shock in mice. 265 psi of N2, 185 psi of argon, 27.5 psi of sulfur hexaflouride and 8.6 psi of nitrous oxide would protect 50% of the mice studied from the convulsive seizures. The intensity and frequency of hyperoxic convulsive seizures induced in white mice by 90 psi of O2 were considerably diminished by exposure of the animals to 400 psi of N2. It is suggested that N2 narcosis differs very little from that produced by nitrous oxide.
