Abstract
It is apparent that a good mechanism for handling computing exceptions is essential for the construction of robust and maintainable Fortran 90 code. Ideally such code would execute rapidly when all is well and not fail in situations such as when data is near the arithmetic limits or there is insufficient memory for an automatic array. A language feature is needed that permits transfer of control when necessary from straightforward fast code to slower code that uses an alternative algorithm. Keywords
