Abstract
A number of species [60] representing members of the Cyanophyta, Rhodophyta, Heterokontophyta, Cryptophyta, Dinophyta, Euglenophyta and Chlorophyta were analyzed for their specific patterns of photoassimilatory products. The kinetics of 14C-labeling during photosynthetic carbon assimilation are indicative for accumulation of certain compounds. Amoung the accumulated low MW carbohydrates monosaccharides, disaccharides, alditols (polyhydroxy alcohols) and simple heterosides are found. Occurrence and distribution of such compounds are in general characteristic for the different algal classes are are in some cases useful parameters for a (bio)chemical circumscription even of lower taxa at the ordinal or the generic level.
