Abstract
A more detailed analysis than has hitherto been attempted of merging procedures within a computer is given. It is shown that access time to working and backing storage has an important influence on the selection of the most desirable merging base. This is illustrated by reference to the Pegasus and other similarly constructed computers, and some of the implications in logical design are discussed. Keywords
